Major Area Paper Option
Students have the option of requesting to do a Major Area
Paper in lieu of the comprehensive examination.
- Grade Point. An overall average of 3.75 in core
courses (not practica or electives) is required for
students wishing to exercise this option.
- Approval. Approval must be granted by the student's
major professor, doctoral committee, and the Clinical
faculty. Faculty reserve the right to disapprove the
option when serious concerns about the quality of a
student's academic work exist.
- Scope. The student's oral defense will be on the Major
Area Paper plus related areas of existing knowledge
beyond the scope of the paper itself. These areas
should be delineated by the committee during the
proposal meeting and explicitly set forth in writing
for the student and committee. A reading list should
also be formally developed by the student's committee.
The three- to four-hour oral defense should be
divided, with approximately half of the time spent
defending the written product and half discussing and
defending related knowledge.
- Grading. It is expected that only our best students
will request the MAP option and will not only pass, but
go on to publish their papers. If a relatively small
portion of the paper or related area(s) defense does
not meet minimal standards, remediation can be
recommended in the form of a partial re-write, another
oral, or a short paper on the material in the question.
Faculty will vote to fail those students whose
substantive performance is below minimal standards.
This could result in the writing of another MAP paper
on a different topic or the requirement to take the
written comprehensive exam. This decision will be made
by the student's doctoral committee.
Internship Requirements
Each student in the Clinical Program is required to complete
a one-year, full-time APA-approved internship in a training
facility approved by the Program area. Students on internship
are required to register for a minimum of three hours of credit.
Recommended Guidelines
Recommended guidelines for progressing through the program
in five years:
- First Semester (Year One) -- Learn about the research
interests and availability of major professor for the
thesis. Decide on both by beginning of the second semester.
- Second Semester (Year One) -- Become well acquainted with
the research literature, work as a research assistant, and
meet with major professor to determine a thesis topic. It
is recommended that the student spend at least 6 hours per
week in these activities. Failure to do so may seriously
hamper progress.
- Summer Semester (Year One) -- Write thesis proposal. Allow
10 hours per week. Assume more than one revision.
- First and Second Semester (Year Two) -- Defend proposal,
collect and analyze data. Allow two semesters for data
collection and analysis. (If possible, write and defend
thesis by end of second semester.)
- Summer Semester (Year Two) -- Write results and discussion.
- First Semester (Year Three) -- Defend thesis at beginning of
term. Begin work on dissertation proposal. Study for
comps.
- Second Semester (Year Three) -- Take comprehensive exams.
Defend dissertation proposal by end of semester.
- Summer Semester (Year Three) -- Begin collecting data.
- First and Second Semester (Year Four) -- Complete data
collection and analysis. Write results and discussion.
Defend dissertation by end of semester.
- Year Five -- Internship.
