INTERDISCIPLINARY PH.D. IN SPEECH/LANGUAGE/HEARING SCIENCES

The program of doctoral studies offered at the University of South Florida by the Department of Psychology and Communication Sciences and Disorders in Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences is a specialization within the Ph.D. program in Experimental Psychology. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in behavioral science and specialized study in an area of normal or disordered speech, language, or hearing processes. There is a strong emphasis on preparation of students for careers in basic and applied research in academic, clinical or corporate settings.

A. Psychology Graduate Core 10 credits

*B. Communication Sciences Core 9 credits

*C. Communication Disorders Core 9-10 credits

  2. 2. Hearing Disorders (3-4 credits)

  3. 3. Speech Disorders (3 credits)

D. Methodology and Instrumentation 10 credits

*Some courses in B. and C. may be waived for students entering with a recent Master's degree in Speech/Language Pathology or Audiology.

Example of Course of Study for MS/MA Students Entering Ph.D. Program

This is a possible course of study for a student entering with a recent Master's degree in Speech/Language Pathology or Audiology. One Communication Sciences core course and two Communication Disorders core courses are waived because of prior satisfaction of requirements. This program includes five specialty courses (min=3). Numbers in columns refer to credit hours not courses.

Students must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credits/semester during regular terms) until they become candidates for the Ph.D. Candidacy is granted after successful completion of required course work, the Master's thesis, and the comprehensive examination.
