USF DEPT. OF PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM OF STUDY

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

GRADUATE PROGRAM

REQUIRED PROGRAM OF STUDY

By the end of the second year of graduate study, all students must have completed the general Departmental core course requirements (10 credit hours) with a grade of at least "B" in each course.

The Departmental core course requirement consists of five foundation courses in psychology, each designated as a two- credit-hour course. Students may submit formal requests for University transfer of credit on the basis of evidence of comparable graduate-level work completed with a grade of "B" or better at another institution. However, note that University rules limit the student to transferring only eight (8) semester hours or three (3) courses towards the degree at USF. Additional courses may be waived, but students are still required to complete 90 hours for the Ph.D. Students entering with a Masters degree may have 30 of their postbaccalaurate credits applied to the 90 hours required for the Ph.D. Requests for waivers of core courses which are based on independent study or partial exposure to core content areas in previous graduate work will not be approved. Under these circumstances, students may request credit by examination from the instructor responsible for the particular core course or courses. The student must receive a minimum grade of "B" on the core examination to obtain a waiver for that course. Retakes are not permitted in the credit by examination procedure. Students who enter the Program with a Master's degree from another university must complete all core courses not included in their previous graduate work, as documented by the student's official transcript.

Students who receive a grade of less than "B" in a core course must retake that course at the earliest possible date. Following a second failing grade in the same core course, the student must petition the Graduate Program Committee to retake the course a third time.
